L'Unité d'Arc Parabolique, "MARP", contient un arc articulé préformé, qui peut être soumis à des charges ponctuelles ou uniformément réparties par au moyen de sept câbles (cordons) uniformément répartis avec des suspensions.
L'un des supports de l'arc est fixe, tandis que l'autre peut être fixe ou mobile dans le sens horizontal. Lorsque les deux supports sont fixes, on étudiera les conditions hyperstatiques de l'arc (1 degré de liberté), tandis que si l'un des supports est mobile, on analysera les conditions isostatiques de l'arc (0 degré de liberté).
Pour fixer le support mobile, de façon à ce qu'il fonctionne comme un support fixe, un jeu de poids est utilisé pour annuler le déplacement horizontal et un autre jeu de poids pour équilibrer la réaction verticale du support.
Pour mesurer la déformation de l'arc sous charge, l'unité dispose de deux comparateurs, l'un qui mesure le déplacement horizontal du support libre et l'autre qui mesure la flexion de l'arc.
