11.- 化学工学

化学工学はプロセス工学の一分野であり、原料を有用で付加価値の高い製品に変換することを目的として、原料に物理的、化学的、生化学的な変化が起こるプロセスを網羅しています。

この分野は、これらの変化につながるプロセスの研究、設計、最適化、開発、運用を担当しています。また、環境分野、新技術・新素材の設計など、研究・イノベーションの幅広い分野での応用が期待されています。

エネルギー(主に石油)、医薬品、食品、電子機器など、他にも多くの産業の基礎とされており、一部の国では経済的にも重要な要素の一つとなっています。

すべての化学プロセスには、一連の段階があります。このように、ある変化が発生する各ステップを単位操作と定義しています。

一方、物質が化学的に変化するプロセスの段階は、化学反応器で行われます。物質に必要な化学変化が起こるために必要な条件を発生させるための装置です。

化学工学の歴史の中での化学技術者の知識と行動範囲の広さ、環境改善のための技術進歩を考えると、設備・プロセスの設計、設備・プラントの組立、生産管理、管理、品質管理、環境管理、マーケティング、製品・プロセスの研究開発、その他多くの管理業務など、化学技術者の役割はますます大きくなっています。
