10.- PROCESS CONTROL

Equipment or processes that require maintaining some fixed parameter can easily be found in industry. The speed of a motor, the flow, level and temperature of a hydraulic circuit or the pressure of a compressed air system are a good example. The aim of process control engineering is the automation of these processes through the implementation of monitoring and control systems.

This discipline covers from the study of the system dynamics and the instrumentation involved (sensors, actuators, controllers, etc.) to the development of control strategies and their subsequent implementation, including the study of the different industrial communications protocols used in this type of systems (Fieldbus, HART, etc.).

Nowadays, the most commonly used control algorithm is the PID control (proportional, integral and derivative). From this control mechanism, more complex strategies have been developed, such as the cascade control, multivariable control, feedforward control and selective control. These strategies are implemented using industrial controllers, programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and SCADA control and acquisition applications that, in addition to the control, allow the process visualization. The control can be carried out with a single control device (centralized control system) or through an organized network of controllers (distributed control system).

The improvements in productivity and efficiency that control systems provide to industrial processes are favoring the research of new advanced control algorithms, such as the predictive control, adaptive control or fuzzy control.
