バイオメカニクスは、人体の動きをはじめとする生物の生体の動きの力学を研究しています。この研究では、仕事やスポーツなどの日常生活の中で最も単純な動きから、心臓などの内臓の動きまで幅広く研究しています。人体の運動学を研究するために、バイオメカニクスは、力学の原理と解剖学と生理学の知識を応用して、新しい診断・治療機器の設計や、より良い補綴物やインプラントの設計を可能にします。

現在、バイオメカニクスでは、関節と筋肉を組み合わせた様々な動きを分析しています。これらの解析により、人体が受ける荷重や応力を調べることができます。人間の運動学の知識は、怪我の治療とその後のリハビリテーション、柔軟な動きを可能にする義肢の設計、身体活動のパフォーマンスを向上させるための新しいスポーツ技術の探求、または仕事や家庭での活動を行う際の生体の劣化を防ぐことを可能にします。これらの知識はすべて、バイオメカニクスのいくつかの分野に分けることができます:メディカルバイオメカニクス、スポーツバイオメカニクス、職業バイオメカニクスです。バイオメカニクスのもう一つの応用として、ロボットアプリケーションの設計があります。ロボットアームが行う運動や、その一部の変位能力を電気機械的な運動システムによって実現することは、生物の力学に基づいています。

生物の機械的挙動の継続的な研究は、実際の生物の正常な機能をシミュレートし、刺激に反応することができるバイオニック義足や人工生物を開発するためのバイオメカニクスの応用をリードしています。また、外骨格技術の向上により、運動能力が低下している人の運動能力を向上させ、重度の活動を行う際の身体能力を向上させることが可能となる。
