General Description

The Centrifugal Force Unit, "MFCE", is used to demonstrate the relationship between centrifugal force, rotational speed, mass of a rotating body and distance from the axis.

The unit consists of a vertical axis of rotation and a rotating arm. Several weights are anchored to the rotating arm through retaining holes. These weights will experience the centrifugal force. Therefore, when the assembly begins to rotate, the weights -due to the action of the centrifugal force- pull a system that exerts pressure on a force sensor, thus transmitting the centrifugal force to the sensor. The greater the weight and the separation distance, the greater the force. The rotational movement is generated by a motor with speed sensor.

The unit is supplied with an electronic console with two digital displays to show the motor speed and the centrifugal force value and a speed controller for the motor.

A transparent protective cover provides protection against the rotating parts and allows the student to observe different experiments. Besides, the motor is shut off when the protective cover is open, working as a safety element to avoid possible accidents.

Exercises and guided practices

GUIDED PRACTICAL EXERCISES INCLUDED IN THE MANUAL

  1. Verification of the relationship between centrifugal force and the mass of a rotating body.
  2. Verification of the relationship between centrifugal force and the distance from the axis of rotation (radius of rotation).
  3. Verification of the relationship between centrifugal force and the rotational speed.
  4. Comparison of the experimental results with the results calculated from theory.
