6.2.- PLC AUTOMATION

Automation is the use of computerized and electromechanical systems to control machinery and industrial processes. One of the elements that can automate and control processes is the Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC). A PLC is a small industrial computer designed to work in industrial environments and automate electro-mechanical processes. PLCs are able to control from small workstations to complete industrial processes according to the data they receive from digital and analog sensors and switches.

The current trend of the industrial world and the automation is the implementation of an Industry 4.0 where SCADA systems and process monitoring on tablets or mobile devices are gaining great relevance. Real-time Ethernet communication for the control and coordination of machines allows more flexible and faster solutions for a manufacturing process. Another industry trend is the use of robots and collaborative robot systems, capable of working synchronized with operators, increasing the processes efficiency and productivity.

In the immediate future, the objective is to integrate the concept of Industry 4.0 with the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to make good use of the advantages of IoT (Internet of Things), process data management (Big Data) and cloud storage (Cloud) for a global interconnection of industrial production systems and devices.
