8.6.- AERODYNAMICS

Aerodynamics is the part of fluid mechanics that studies the gases in motion and the forces or reactions to which the bodies that interact with those gases are subjected. Apart from the importance of aerodynamics in itself, the value of its contribution to aeronautics must be added. According to Mach number or the relative speed of a body in motion with respect to the air, the aerodynamics is divided into subsonic and supersonic according to whether that number is less than or greater than unity.

In fluid mechanics, within the study of gases, air is normally used, being the main variables that are usually quantified the speed, pressure, drag force or lift force, etc. Wind tunnels are devices widely used in fluid mechanics tests to determine wind action on different types of bodies. The model to be studied remains at rest, while the flow is set in motion. The main parts of an aerodynamic tunnel are: the fan, the diffuser, the chamber, a contraction section and a test section.

Every time we move or throw an object, a number of physical principles that we do not normally notice act. Knowing the principles of aerodynamics is useful for a long list of activities, from the takeoff and piloting of a plane, to driving a vehicle or throwing a ball.
