水文学とは、大気や地殻内に存在する水の空間的・時間的な分布や性質（降水、流出、土壌水分、蒸発散など）を研究する学問です。一方、水文地質学は、地下水の研究を専門とする水文学の一分野である。

私たちが慣れ親しんだライフスタイルは、清潔で安価な水が十分に入手できるかどうか、使用後の安全な廃棄ができるかどうかに大きく依存しています。

今日、水文学は水資源の利用計画を立てる上で重要な役割を果たしており、上水道、下水処理、排水、河川保護、レクリエーションなどのエンジニアリングプロジェクトの基本的な部分となっています。
