電話通信は、固定電話網から高速移動体通信網へと目覚ましい進化を遂げています。このように、固定技術からGSMまたは第2世代（2G）、GPRS（3G）、4G技術またはプロトコルから5G技術への進化がありました。

インターネットの出現とTCP/IPプロトコルに基づくさまざまなプロトコルの開発以来、ローカルまたは近距離（LAN、WLAN、WPAN）と長距離（WAN）コンピュータネットワークの指数関数的な成長がありました。無線ネットワーク内では、WiFi、Wimax、Bluetooth、ZigBeeなどのプロトコルや規格により、モノのインターネット（IoT）と呼ばれるものでインターネットに接続されたデバイスやシステムが誕生しています。
