電子工学の基礎は、最も一般的な電子回路の一般的な動作とそれを構成する電子部品の個々の機能を分析し、理解するための強固な基礎を提供することを目的としています。

電子工学のような専門分野で理論的な基礎を身につけることは、その後の複雑な電子システムの設計・開発に必要なステップです。電子工学は工学の一分野でもあるため、理論的な概念の多くは直接的な実践的な応用を持っており、理論的な授業に関連した実践例があれば、電子工学の学生が概念を吸収するのが非常に容易になります。

電子工学の基礎は多岐にわたりますが、その中でも電子回路の解析（オームの法則、キルヒホッフの法則、テーベニンの定理、重ね合わせの定理、解析した回路をより単純な等価回路に変換するなどの方程式や手続きを用いて）、基本的な部品（抵抗器、インダクタンス、コンデンサ、さまざまな技術のトランジスタ、ダイオード、サイリスタ、ロジックゲートなど）の研究は見逃せません。(電圧源と電流源、ローパスとハイパスのフィルタ、増幅回路、抵抗回路、トランジスタ分極回路、デジタル回路入門、論理回路など)と機能別に分類された回路群のことです。)
