Domotics是负责家庭自动化的技术，使其成为智能系统，而inmotics是应用于建筑的自动化技术，其目的与domotics相同，但规模更大，从而形成智能建筑。这两种技术都是基于通信协议和软件，通过有线或无线网络（Zig-Bee）集成，用于控制和管理设备（硬件）。

在开发domotic和inmotic自动化系统时，有不同的通信标准。目前应用最广泛的是KNX-EIB、LONworks、Z-WAVE和BacNet协议。在照明领域，DALI控制系统尤为重要。所有这些系统都有自己的编程软件，有传感器和执行器。市场上最常用的传感器有，例如，存在传感器、接近传感器、亮度传感器、温度传感器、阻隔传感器、视网膜传感器、红外传感器、检测漏水的电导率传感器、气体传感器、一氧化碳传感器、玻璃破碎传感器、门窗磁传感器、测量能耗的传感器等。利用编程软件，可以创建不同的场景，将这些设备与不同的执行器联系起来，如水电阀、气电阀、照明控制的调光器、防盗或火灾报警的声光报警器、二进制输出的设备等。
