如今,传统电网要想向能源分散化迈出决定性的一步,储能是必不可少的。问题在于,电能不能以原来的形式储存,即必须将其转化为其他形式的可以储存的能量。这些储能系统如水泵系统、压缩空气储能系统、飞轮、电化学蓄能器等。

水泵系统的工作原理基本上是将水在高空推进,随后利用水因高空积累的势能。随后,流体通过大型管道,在管道中安装与发电机相连的水轮机。它是一个完全可再生的过程,不会产生温室气体排放。缺点是这些系统对环境的影响很大,因为它们需要对土地的地形进行重要修改,以便正确开发能源资源。

使用压缩空气的储能系统,简称CAES,是将电能转化为机械能的另一种选择,反之亦然。目的是当风力发电场或光伏发电场的能源生产过剩时,启动大型空气压缩机,在高压和高温下将其积聚在山洞或储罐中。当对能源的需求增长时,这种高压储存的空气通过阀门释放出来,以驱动连接到电动发电机的气动涡轮机。这些系统的缺点是效率不高,每单位功率所需的压力和体积都很大。此外,它还需要对空气进行特殊的处理,以消除湿气,并由于流体的初始压缩而节省热能。

带飞轮的储能系统是解决储能问题的好办法。大型飞轮由连接到电网的变频器移动。这些系统可以将电能转化为动能,反之亦然。各种各样的技术都被用来将电能传递给飞轮。双向变频器,又称背靠背变频器,是一种可以将电能传递给飞轮,反之亦然的替代品。

电化学蓄能器或电池是基于将电能转化为化学能的蓄能器。蓄电池有多种类型,但在电力系统领域最主要的是铅酸蓄电池、钠硫蓄电池、镍氯化钠蓄电池和锂离子蓄电池。流动电池的原理是一样的,不过它们的不同之处在于,它们是一个大型的开放系统,液体不断地从沉积物中被抽到电池电极上,从而实现了大的累积容量。
