生物医学工程研究工程知识在生物和医学领域的应用。其中生物医学电子学是该工程最相关的领域之一,将电子学的概念应用到医疗仪器的开发中。

现在,医学上开发的很多工艺都需要电子工程的支持,才能解决某些需求。从电阻、线圈、电容等基本电子元件的组合,到更复杂的信号调理电路、模/数转换(A/D)或电磁波发射,都可以设计出能够从生物体获取信息或应用医疗的设备。此外,控制电子技术,如PID调节器或神经网络,使得开发能够在实验室中以受控方式供应物质或平衡化学反应(stoichiometry)的医疗设备和仪器成为可能。其他元件,如液晶显示器(LCD)或LED显示器,具有非常低的功耗,使其成为便携式医疗设备的理想选择。要能对医疗设备的电子电路进行解释和设计,必须要有本临床和控制电子仪器的综合知识。

未来的生物医学电子学旨在为未来的医学奠定基础,在未来的医学中,电子设备将能够快速诊断病人,并尽可能高效地应用非侵入性疗法。此外,电子元件将越来越小,新材料也将被开发出来,有利于纳米机器人的设计。这项技术将能在细胞水平上进行诊断和治疗,甚至可以人工、自主地复制和修复DNA。
