Elektrizität ist eine sekundäre Energiequelle, die durch die Bewegung und Wechselwirkung zwischen positiven und negativen elektrischen Ladungen erzeugt wird. Die elektrische Leistung wird aus primären Energiequellen gewonnen, wie z.B. Sonnenenergie,Wasserkraft, Windkraft, geothermische Energie, Biomasse, Öl, Erdgas oder Kohle. Für die Nutzung dieser Energien sind Kraftwerksanlagen, wie z.B. Wasserkraftwerke, Windkraftwerke, Photovoltaikkraftwerke, Kernkraftwerke, Kombikraftwerke, etc. erforderlich.

Heutzutage ist elektrische Energie eine wesentliche Energiequelle, die in vielen Anwendungen vorhanden ist. In Wohnhäusern und in der Industrie wird sie für Beleuchtung, Anti-Diebstahlsysteme, Brandmeldeanlagen, Kalt- und Warmklimaanlagen, Haus- und Gebäudeautomationssysteme, elektrische Maschinen, usw.

verwendet.

Elektrische Leistung wird durch elektrische Systeme erzeugt, die ihre Verfügbarkeit garantieren. Alle elektrischen Systeme werden von Stromerzeugungsanlagen, Hochspannungs-Stromübertragungsleitungen, Transformationszentren gebildet, Mittel- und Niederspannungsverteilungsleitungen und Stromkontrollzentren, von wo aus der Netzbetreiber den Stromtransport und das Stromerzeugungssystem verwaltet und betreibt.

Die strong Entwicklung des elektrischen Systems hat den Weg frei gemacht für Smart Energy Networks (Smart Grids). Diese zeichnen sich durch dezentralisiertStromerzeugung aus, wobei erneuerbare Energien, Mikronetze, Smart Meter und stronggeschrittene Schutzsysteme an Relevanz gewinnen. Ihr Ziel ist die Aufrechterhaltung der Kontinuität der Stromversorgung, ihre Zuverlässigkeit, ihre Energieeffizienz und die Reduktion der CO2-Emissionen.
