Thermodynamik ist ein Zweig der Physik, der zur phänomenologischen Wissenschaft gehört, die reale Systeme untersucht, nicht modelliert, und einer experimentellen Methode folgt. Infolgedessen werden diese Systeme experimentell durch Annäherungen und Messung von Variablen definiert.

Makroskopisch werden thermodynamische Systeme durch Variablen definiert. Eine große Anzahl thermodynamischer Variablen kann gemessen werden, aber nur eine einzige Zahl ist erforderlich, um das System eindeutig zu bestimmen, die Zustandsfunktionen. Druck, Volumen, Temperatur<, Entropie und Ethalpie sind einige der wichtigsten Zustandsgrößen.

Änderungen in den Zuständen der Materie finden mit der Modifikation der thermodynamischen Variablen statt. Die fundamentalen Materiezuständesind fest, flüssig und Gas. Es gibt für jedes Element oder jede Verbindung bestimmte Druck- und Temperatur-Bedingungen, bei denen Zustandsänderungen auftreten.

Das Konzept des idealen Gases wurde eingeführt, um reale thermodynamische Systeme und die erzeugten Zustandsänderungen zu vereinfachen. Sie werden durch die Gleichung ideales Gas PV = nRT definiert. Eine ideale inkompressible Flüssigkeit wird auf die gleiche Weise approximiert.

In einem geschlossenen System mit Flüssigkeit gibt es ein thermodynamisches Gleichgewicht zwischen der Flüssigkeit und ihrer Dampfphase. Die Entwicklung von Druck und Temperatur des im Gleichgewicht befindlichen Systems definiert die Druckkurve des Dampfes und der vorhandene Zustand wird als Sättigungszustand bezeichnet. Aus dieser Entwicklung wird das Temperatur-Druck-Diagramm dargestellt.

Das Studium dieser Konzepte ist in der Praxis von großer Bedeutung, im Wesentlichen angewandt auf Wasser. So wird z.B. die Spezifizierung von Feuchte, Kontraktion und Ausdehnung Niveau des idealen Stoffes dann in realen thermischen Maschinen, wie z.B. Turbinen, Düsen, Dampfmaschinen zur Bewertung von Betriebsschemata angewandt.
