电话通信经历了从固定电话网到高速移动网的显著发展。因此，从固定技术到GSM或第二代(2G)、GPRS(3G)和4G技术或协议，再到5G技术，都有一个演变过程。

自从互联网出现，并在TCP/IP协议的基础上发展出不同的协议后，本地或短距离（LAN、WLAN、WPAN）和长距离（WAN）计算机网络呈指数级增长。在无线网络内，WiFi、Wimax、蓝牙、ZigBee等协议和标准催生了与互联网连接的设备和系统，即所谓的物联网（IoT）。
