Electrónica automóvel é o ramo da engenharia electrónica centrada exclusivamente no desenvolvimento de sistemas eléctricos e electrónicos especialmente concebidos para serem instalados na carro. Todos os sistemas desenvolvidos em automotive electronics são adaptados para suportar as duras condições de operação num carro.

Actualmente, os sistemas electrónicos instalados em carros são responsáveis por uma grande variedade de tarefas, tais como o sistema de gestão do motor através da unidade de controlo do motor ou ECU, o sistema de injecção, o sistema de travagem anti-bloqueio ou ABS, o regulação antideslizante ou ASR, o distribuição de força de travagem electrónica ou EBD, o eletrónico programa de estabilidade ou ESP, o sistema de sacos de ar, o sistema de iluminação, o sistema de constrongo da cabina, etc. Todos estes sistemas contribuíram para melhorar segurança, eficiência, constrongo e reduzir poluição emitida pelos automóveis

O futuro da electrónica automóvel é promissor devido à crescente incorporação da electrónica nos automóveis com a introdução do conceito automóvel ligado (com o telefone do utilizador e o internet), com a crescente expansão do veículo híbrido ou carro eléctrico (no qual a gestão do bateria e do carro propulsão é feita electronicamente), e especialmente com o desenvolvimento e a implementação do autónomo ou auto-estrada, onde é necessário um grande número de sensores de diferentes tipos e uma unidade de processamento potente e robusta para efectuar o autónomo de condução do veículo em segurança.
