7.2.- ENGENHARIA MECÂNICA AUTOMOTIVA

A indústria automóvel é uma das principais aplicações da corrente engenharia mecânica. O veículo com motor de combustão interna a gasolina é considerado o maior invenção do do século XX, embora os primeiros protótipos já tivessem sido feitos no final do século XVIII. O primeiro protótipo data de 1769. Era uma carruagem de equipa. Não teve sucesso, mas estabeleceu os precedentes para o desenvolvimento do motor gasolina em 1860. A partir desta descoberta, começou um desenvolvimento imparável e indústrias automóveis como Benz, Peugeot, Fiat ou Ford proliferaram. Com a passagem do milénio, a utilização de outros combustíveis fósseis, tais como diesel, começou a ser investigada.

Agora, utilizando todas as tecnologias disponíveis technology e meios, é possível conhecer o comportamento de todos os elementos que compõem um veículo num número infinito de situações. Este nível de conhecimento é possível graças à engenharia por detrás de cada concepção, análise, etc. Alguns dos sistemas mais estudados são:

A tendência neste sector é a procura de fontes de energia mais sustentáveis e amigas do ambiente, bem como designs mais eficientes com maior desempenho, que se tornaram uma realidade com o aparecimento de veículos híbridos e eléctricos e veículos movidos por outros combustíveis, tais como gás de petróleo liquefeito (LPG) ou hidrogénio.
