Thermodinâmica é um ramo da física que pertence à ciência fenomenológica que estuda sistemas reais, não modelados, e segue um método experimental. Como consequência, esses sistemas são definidos experimentalmente por aproximações e medição de variáveis.

Macroscopicamente, sistemas termodinâmicos são definidos por variáveis. Um grande número de variáveis termodinâmicas pode ser medido, mas apenas um número é necessário para determinar inequivocamente o sistema, o state functions. pressão, volume, temperatura, entropia e entrípia são algumas das variáveis de estado mais importantes.

Alterações no estados de matéria ocorrem com a modificação das variáveis termodinâmicas. Os fundamentais estados de matéria são sólido, líquido e gás. Existem certas condições pressão e temperatura para cada elemento ou composto em que ocorrem mudanças de estado.

O conceito de gás ideal foi introduzido para simplificar os verdadeiros sistemas termodinâmicos e as mudanças de estado geradas. Estes são definidos pela equação difícilidade do gás ideal PV = nRT. Um líquido incompressível ideal é aproximado da mesma forma.

Num sistema fechado com líquido, existe um equilíbrio termodinâmico entre o líquido e a sua fase de vapor. A evolução da pressão e temperatura do sistema em equilíbrio definem a curva de pressão do vapor e o estado existente é chamado estado de saturação. Dessa evolução, o diagrama temperatura-pressão é representado.

O estudo destes conceitos é de grande importância na prática, essencialmente aplicado à água. Por exemplo, a especificação de moção, contracção e expansão níveis da matéria ideal é então aplicada em máquinas térmicas reais, tais como turbinas, bocais, motores de vapor para a avaliação de esquemas de operação.
