7.3.- ENGENHARIA DE MATERIAIS

É o ramo científico e industrial responsável por fazer uma interpretação industrial da ciência dos materiais. Antropologicamente, as diferentes fases do desenvolvimento humano foram classificadas de acordo com os materiais utilizados no fabrico de ferramentas (Idade da Pedra, Idade do Bronze, etc.). Assim, o desenvolvimento da humanidade está intimamente ligado ao estudo de novos materiais.

Durante os últimos 200 anos, descobertas sobre materiais, tão reveladoras como a contribuição de Gibbs, foram feitas. Ele demonstrou a existência de uma relação entre as propriedades de um material e a sua estrutura. Estas descobertas permitiram o desenvolvimento de novos materiais, tais como graphene, e a investigação de novos campos, tais como nanomateriais ou nanotecnologia.

Um enorme número de teste têm sido realizados para atingir esse nível de desenvolvimento, incluindo tes mecânicos de flexão, dureza teste (Rockell, Brinell, Vickers, Martens), ensaios de tracção, ensaios de tracção (tenacidade e resistência), ensaios de tracção (creep), ensaios de coração, bem como ensaios químicos (tratamentos térmicos, estruturas internas, etc.). Da mesma forma, os materiais podem ser classificados como:

  • Metais (ferrosos e não ferrosos).
  • Cerâmica.
  • Polímeros (termoplásticos, termoplásticos e elastómeros).
  • Materiais compostos.

As aplicações destes avanços são evidentes em diferentes áreas industrial, tais como a automotiva, electrónica, aeroespacial, aeronáutica e biomédica, dando assim à engenharia de materiais a importância que tem na sociedade de hoje.
