Tecnologia alimentar é um ramo da Ciência Alimentar baseado em conhecimentos multidisciplinares de nutrição, análise química, física, biochequímica e engenharia. Além disso, a Tecnologia Alimentar visa compreender a natureza dos alimentos e os fenómenos associados com a sua spoilagem, desenvolver processos para os alimentos produção e melhorar os atributos dos alimentos para satisfazer consumidores. A indústria alimentar inclui os seguintes sectores: transformação ou processamento, preservação e fabricação.

O sector alimentar é tão vasto que afecta outros sectores, tais como o confecção de embalagens e transporte, e utiliza tratamentos para a purificação da água.

Tecnologias de tratamento de água obter água potável, tão necessária para a nossa vida. A água de diferentes fontes (poços, rios, mares, industrial águas residuais) é sujeita a muitas estágios, embora todos os tratamentos coincidam geralmente em três fases básicas: água recepção, processos de reacção e condicionamento e abastecimento.
