A instalações eléctricas incluem o grupo de circuitos eléctricos destinados a fornecer energia eléctrica a edifícios, instalações, infra-estruturas e qualquer local público.

O campo de instalações eléctricas é vasto. Inclui alta tensão e sistemas eléctricos de baixa tensão. Dentro destes últimos, podemos distinguir entre instalações eléctricas industriais e instalações eléctricas domésticas.

O campo de instalações eléctricas domésticas inclui condicionamento do ar, controlo da iluminação, gestão da energia, sistemas de alarme anti-roubo, sistemas de alarme anti-roubo, sistemas de controlo de acesso, etc.

Por outro lado, sistemas de automação industrial estão a tornar-se cada vez mais comuns em instalações eléctricas industriais. Estes sistemas consistem em controladores, sensores, actuadores e switches que cumprem diferentes objectivos. Por exemplo, selvados>PLCs, variável accionadores de frequência e arrancadores electrónicos são frequentemente utilizados para controlo de máquinas eléctricas. Estes dispositivos permitem um maior grau de automação e controlo sobre máquinas eléctricas. Por este motivo, estão gradualmente a substituir as máquinas convencionais delta de arranque.

Todas as instalações requerem protecções eléctricas que garantam a segurança tanto do equipamento como das pessoas. De acordo com o elemento a ser protegido, existem protecções tais como relés de protecção de sobrecarga, relés de protecção de sobrecorrente, relés de protecção de sobretensão, relés de protecção diferencial, relés de protecção de potência inversa, etc.
