Hidrologia é a ciência que estuda a distribuição espacial e temporal e as propriedades da água disponível na atmosfera e na crosta terrestre (precipitação, escoamento, humidade do solo, evapotranspiração, etc.). Por outro lado, Hidrogeologia é o ramo da hidrologia que estuda as águas subterrâneas.

O estilo de vida a que nos habituámos depende, em grande medida, da disponibilidade de água suficientemente limpa e barata e de um sistema seguro de eliminação de águas residuais.

Natureza limita a quantidade de água disponível para uso humano. Embora haja água suficiente no planeta, nem sempre está no lugar e no momento certos. Além disso, há indícios de que<é strong> desperdício químicodescarte inadequado no passado está agora a aparecer em fontes de água.

Agora enfrentamos um consumo muito elevado, fornecimentos incertos, e crescentes exigências de protecção contra cabeças de inundação e poluição. Os efeitos da escassez de água limpa sobre a economia e a saúde são preocupantes. Hidrologia desenvolveu-se como uma ciência em resposta à necessidade de compreender o complexo sistema de água da Terra e ajudar a resolver problemas de água.

Hidrologia tem um papel muito importante no planeamento da recursos hidráulicos utilização. Além disso, tornou-se uma parte fundamental dos projectos de engenharia relacionados com abastecimento de água, disposição de águas residuais, drainage, protecção contra a acção dos rios e recreação.
