11.- ENGENHARIA QUÍMICA

Engenharia química é o ramo da engenharia de processos que inclui os processos em que físico, químico e/ou biochequímico ocorrem alterações nos materiais, com o objectivo de transformar materiais de desenho em produtos úteis e de valor acrescentado. Esta disciplina abrange o estudo, design, optimização, desenvolvimento e operação dos processos envolvidos nestas mudanças. Além disso, tem muitas aplicações dado o seu vasto campo de pesquisa e inovação, como na ambiente, na concepção de novas tecnologias e materiais, etc.

É considerada a base de muitas outras indústrias, como a energia (principalmente eletricidade), farmacêutica, alimentos e electrónica indústrias, entre outras, o que a torna um dos factores económicos mais importantes em alguns países.

Todos os processos químicos implicam uma série de etapas. Cada uma destas etapas em que ocorre uma determinada mudança foi definida como uma unidade de operação.

Por outro lado, as fases do processo que envolvem uma mudança química na matéria são levadas a cabo em reactores químicos. São dispositivos concebidos para gerar as condições necessárias para a mudança química necessária na matéria.

Dado o vasto campo de conhecimento e acção do engenheiro químico ao longo da história da engenharia química e o progresso tecnológico em termos de melhoria ambiental, o papel do engenheiro químico hoje em dia continua a crescer, realizando actividades tais como: concepção de equipamentos e processos, montagem de equipamentos e instalações, controlo de produção, gestão, controlo de qualidade, controlo ambiental, controlo, marketing, R e D de produtos e processos, e muitas outras tarefas administrativas.

Podem desenvolver a sua actividade profissional em indústrias tais como: petroquímica, refinarias, indústria do carvão, bioquímica, biotecnologia, materiais, energia, farmacêutica, etc.
