13.- MEIO AMBIENTE

Ambiente é um sistema formado por físico, químico e biológico elementos que interagem e são modificados por natural, social e culturalfactores humanos. Não é apenas o espaço em que a vida se desenvolve, inclui também seres vivos, objectos, água, solo, ar e relações entre eles. É o ambiente que determina a forma de vida de sociedade.

A ciência ambiental estuda a ambiente. É uma área e ramo baseado na concepção, aplicação e gestão de processos tecnológicos, produtos e serviços para a prevenção, controlo e solução de problemas de degradação ambiental, para o desenvolvimento da utilização sustentável de recursos naturais nos processos de produção e consumo, tendo sempre como prioridade a excelente qualidade de vida no nosso ambiente.

A importância do ambiente reside no facto de todas as formas de vida terem lugar nele e não noutro lugar, pelo que o seu cuidado e preservação debe ser um dos elementos essenciais da acção humana. Hoje em dia existe uma consciência crescente da relevância destas acções.

Devem à crescente consciencialização de problemas ambientais, não só indivíduos mas também governos e empresas começaram a desenvolver actividades que tendem a preservar ou limitar os danos ao ambiente. Assim, algumas disciplinas da ciência ambiental, tais como hidrologia, hidrogeologia, tratamento de água e gás, reciclagem e poluição entre outras, ganharam grande importância.
