Hidrologi adalah ilmu yang mempelajari distribusi spasial dan temporal serta sifat-sifat air yang tersedia di atmosfer dan kerak bumi (curah hujan, limpasan, kelembaban tanah, evapotranspirasi, dll.). Di sisi lain, Hidrogeologi adalah cabang ilmu hidrologi yang mempelajari airtanah.

Gaya hidup kita yang telah menjadi terbiasa sebagian besar bergantung pada ketersediaan air bersih dan murah yang cukup serta sistem pembuangan yang aman untuk air limbah.

Alam membatasi jumlah air yang tersedia untuk digunakan manusia. Meskipun terdapat cukup air di planet ini, air tidak selalu berada di tempat dan waktu yang tepat. Selain itu, terdapat bukti bahwa limbah kimia yang sebelumnya tidak dibuang dengan benar kini muncul di sumber air.

Saat ini kami menghadapi konsumsi yang sangat tinggi, pasokan yang tidak pasti, dan meningkatnya permintaan akan perlindungan terhadap banjir dan polusi. Dampak kekurangan air bersih terhadap perekonomian dan kesehatan sangat mengkhawatirkan. Hidrologi telah berkembang sebagai ilmu sebagai tanggapan atas kebutuhan untuk memahami sistem air Bumi yang kompleks dan membantu memecahkan masalah air.

Saat ini hidrologi memiliki peran yang sangat penting dalam perencanaan penggunaan sumber daya hidrolik. Selain itu, ini telah menjadi bagian mendasar dari proyek teknik yang terkait dengan pasokan air, pembuangan air limbah, drainase, perlindungan terhadap aksi sungai dan rekreasi.
