Tahapan paling khas dari setiap pengembangan perangkat elektronik adalah: menentukan spesifikasi peralatan, merancang sirkuit elektronik yang berbeda yang akan dibutuhkan perangkat (sirkuit catu daya, sirkuit kontrol, sirkuit daya, sirkuit pemfilter sinyal, sirkuit osilator, sirkuit isolasi antara sirkuit daya dan sirkuit sinyal, sirkuit pengkondisian sinyal analog, sirkuit amplifier, sirkuit coder atau decoder, dll.), menghitung karakteristik dari komponen setiap sirkuit, simulasi pengoperasian sirkuit elektronik peralatan, pengujian sirkuit yang berbeda satu per satu, mengembangkan prototipe produk dan, terakhir, membuat produk akhir.

Tahapan pengembangan pengujian dan pembuatan prototipe dari sirkuit elektronik adalah salah satu langkah kunci dalam desain atau desain ulang elektronik sirkuit.

Dulu, pengujian ini dilakukan dengan merakit dan menyolder komponen pada PCB kosong, tetapi berkat standarisasi komponen, bersamaan dengan munculnya prototipe papan tempat memotong roti atau papan protoboard sirkuit dapat dibuat tanpa penyolderan, yang sangat memudahkan konstruksi sirkuit yang akan diuji.
