9.9.- MESIN PEMBAKARAN INTERNAL

Sebuah mesin pembakaran dalam adalah sebuah mesin mekanik-fluida yang mengubah energi kimia dari campuran bahan bakar-udara menjadi energi mekanik setelah melalui proses pembakaran dalam kerja cylinder. Dalam pembakaran, energi yang terkandung dalam bahan bakar dilepaskan melalui penyalaannya dan oksidasi selanjutnya di dalam mesin.

Jenis utama dari mesin pembakaran internal adalah:

  • Mesin piston siklus Otto: ini adalah mesin bensin konvensional.
  • Mesin diesel: bekerja dengan bahan bakar diesel.

Mesin Otto dan diesel memiliki elemen utama yang sama (mesinblok, piston, batang penghubung, poros engkol, katup, dan kepala silinder) dan memiliki sistem yang sama (pasokan bahan bakar, distribusi, penyalaan, pendinginan dan penyalaan) kecuali beberapa elemen tertentu, seperti karburator untuk mesin Otto atau injektor untuk mesin diesel.

Bergantung pada siklus operasi, mesin pembakaran internal dapat diklasifikasikan menjadi:

  • Mesin dua langkah: piston menyelesaikan satu langkah per putaran.
  • Mesin empat langkah: piston menyelesaikan dua langkah per putaran.

Mesin ini menonjol di antara metode propulsi lainnya karena beberapa alasan:

  • Kisaran tinggi, karena nilai kalor bahan bakar yang tinggi.
  • Berbagai macam kekuatan.
  • Banyaknya kemungkinan produksi.

Penting untuk mempelajari pembakaran emisi mesin ini karena mesin tersebut adalah salah satu polutan utama saat ini. Meskipun nilai polusi tidak mewakili satu per satu, nilai tersebut berbahaya jika dirujuk secara keseluruhan, dengan mempertimbangkan bahwa mesin dipasang di sebagian besar kendaraan bermotor.
