Rekayasa mekanik terdiri dari penerapan fisika pada elemen-elemen di sekitar kita untuk memperbaiki perangkat mekanik yang ada atau menciptakan yang baru.

Karena didasarkan pada prinsip-prinsip fisik, asal-usulnya berasal dari awal prinsip-prinsip tersebut dan perkembangannya sangat terkait dengan kemajuan dalam mekanika. Namun, baru setelah penemuan mesin uap, rekayasa mekanik menjadi salah satu pilar pengembangan industri.

Akibat dari penemuan mesin ini, terjadilah Revolusi Industri pada abad ke-17. Sejak saat itu, dengan kontribusi dari ilmuwan dan insinyur seperti Watt, Stephenson, Tesla, atau Rankine, dimulailah pembaruan yang belum pernah terjadi sebelumnya, baik dalam konsep maupun pengembangan mesin-mesin baru.

Dengan perkembangan mesin-mesin ini, konsep industri berubah seperti yang diketahui saat itu. Produksi massal diperkenalkan, desain mesin ditingkatkan, dan, akibatnya, rentang proses produksi meningkat, menghasilkan berbagai produk baru yang sebelumnya tidak terpikirkan dan disesuaikan dengan kebutuhan masyarakat.

Dalam rekayasa mekanik, penting untuk memberikan perhatian khusus pada bidang studi dan aplikasi berikut:

  • Mekanisme.
  • Struktur.
  • Dinamika.
  • Getaran.
  • Osilasi.

Saat ini, setiap industri, mulai dari makanan hingga dirgantara, harus berada di tingkat tertinggi inovasi teknologi. Oleh karena itu, penelitian dan pengembangan perangkat baru menjadi sangat penting, agar selalu memiliki teknologi terbaru dan dapat memenuhi tuntutan industri 4.0.
