13.3.- PENGOLAHAN AIR LIMBAH

Pengolahan air mengacu pada semua operasi yang bertujuan untuk menghilangkan zat tertentu dari air. Operasi tersebut dapat berupa fisik, kimiawi, fisika-kimia atau biologis.

Pengolahan air berfokus pada konsumsi manusia, proses yang terjadi sebelum dan sesudah penggunaannya.

  • Pengolahan air minum: pada instalasi pengolahan air minum (DWTP) dilakukan pengolahan air agar layak untuk dikonsumsi manusia.
  • Pengolahan air limbah: air diolah di instalasi pengolahan air limbah (IPAL), di mana sebagian besar proses pemisahan kontaminan dilakukan.
  • Langkah pertama yang terkena air limbah saat memasuki instalasi pengolahan adalah pretreatment. Padatan besar, pasir, dan lemak dihilangkan.
  • Kemudian, air dikenai apa yang disebut pengolahan primer. Padatan tersuspensi yang mudah mengendap dan sebagian dari bahan organik dibuang.
  • Sisa bahan organik, terlarut dan tersuspensi, dan partikel padat lainnya yang belum dihilangkan pada pengolahan sebelumnya dihilangkan melalui apa yang disebut Proses Biologis Aerobik Pengolahan Air Limbah, yang merupakan pengolahan sekunder dari saluran air.
  • Terkadang perawatan tersier digunakan. Tujuan dari perawatan ini adalah untuk menghilangkan beban organik sisa dan zat pencemar lainnya yang tidak dihilangkan dalam perawatan sekunder, seperti nutrisi, fosfor dan nitrogen.

Pengolahan air sangat penting saat ini karena membantu:

  • Lindungi Kesehatan Masyarakat dan Lingkungan. Apabila air limbah akan dibuang ke badan penerima alami (laut, sungai, danau), maka perlu dilakukan penanganan untuk menghindari penyakit yang disebabkan oleh bakteri dan virus.
  • Melindungi fauna dan flora yang ada di tubuh penerima alam (laut, sungai, dan danau).
  • Menggunakan kembali air olahan: ada kegiatan yang tidak memerlukan air minum, air olahan dapat digunakan tanpa membahayakan kesehatan.
  • Menjamin tidak adanya efek berbahaya pada kesehatan.
