Additional supplies in a laboratory or industry are defined as those supplies necessary for a proper operation of the units. The most common additional supplies are the supply of hot and cold, electricity, process and cooling water, steam and compressed air.

Each of these supplies is vital depending on the activity to be performed, e.g. the electrical supply to drive a motor or operate a resistor, the hot or cold supply to control the temperature or the compressed air to control pneumatic valves.

The necessary process heating can be supplied from a steam or a heat-bearing fluid (water or oil) and is produced by electrical equipment (resistors) or boilers in which a fuel is burned. Cooling is generated by a refrigeration cycle using the heat absorbed in the refrigerant evaporation process. And, compressed air can be supplied from cylinders where gases are stored at a very high pressure or by using compressors.

The scientific area of laboratory equipment would be inconceivable without these additional supplies necessary to carry out the laboratory activities in an appropriate manner.
