The Telephony Systems Unit, "CODITEL", has been designed by EDIBON for the study of the operation of digital switching systems in telephony networks and the understanding of signal transmission and management principles. It allows the practical analysis of a digital switch based on time switching, where signal samples from an input multiplex are reorganized and transmitted in any order through an output multiplex, facilitating the study of connection establishment, channel assignment, and traffic management in digital telephony systems.
The unit is structured similarly to a time switch with two PCM paths, one for input and one for output, following international telephony system recommendations. Its design allows the study of digital circuit switching operation and the control of connections between different users.
The unit is composed of the following main elements:
- Four user line circuits: two intended for tone (multifrequency) terminals and two for pulse (decadic) terminals. The multifrequency circuits are implemented using hybrid integrated circuits that perform the basic functions of a line circuit, while the decadic circuits are built with discrete components. All circuits are compatible with commercial telephone equipment.
- Four numeric receivers: two for pulse (decadic) signals and two for tone (DTMF) signals, assigned to specific lines. It includes a time base that provides system synchronization and a digital tone generator that enables the simulation of telephony signals.
- Digital switching network: It consists of a time-switching matrix implemented using memory elements. Its architecture corresponds to a sequential write and asynchronous read system, allowing the reorganization of signal samples and the establishment of connections between input and output channels.
This Computer Controlled Unit is supplied with the EDIBON Computer Control System (SCADA), and includes: The unit itself + a Control Interface Box + a Data Acquisition Board + Computer Control, Data Acquisition and Data Management Software Packages, for controlling the process and all parameters involved in the process.
