在工业上,很容易找到需要保持固定参数的设备或过程。电动机的速度,流量,液压回路的液位和温度或压缩空气系统的压力就是一个很好的例子。过程控制工程的目标是通过实施监督和控制系统使这些过程自动化。

该学科的范围从对系统动力学和所涉及的仪器(传感器,执行器,控制器等)的研究到控制策略的开发及其后续实现,都通过对不同工业通信协议的研究而得以实现。它们用于此类系统(现场总线,HART等)。

今天最常用的控制算法是PID控制(比例,积分和微分)。通过这种控制机制,已经开发出了更复杂的策略,例如级联控制,多变量控制,预期或前馈控制以及选择性控制。这些策略是通过工业控制器,可编程逻辑控制器(PLC)以及SCADA采集和控制应用程序实现的,这些应用程序除了进行控制外,还可以实现过程的可视化。可以使用单个控制设备(集中控制系统)或通过控制器的组织网络(分布式控制系统)进行控制。

控制系统带给工业过程的生产率和效率的提高,有利于研究新的高级控制算法,例如预测控制,自适应控制或模糊控制。
