One type of gauge is a U-shaped gauge, which balances the unknown pressure with a known pressure. The pressure is determined by measuring the difference in liquid level of the two branches. Most of these gauges can be used as open gauges or as differential gauges, when they indicate the difference between two different pressures from the atmospheric one.
