Mekatronika komputer adalah teknologi yang dapat mengimplementasikan komunikasi antara mesin dan komputer, memungkinkan kontrol proses berdasarkan data waktu nyata, sesuaikan parameter dan lakukan proses produksi dari jarak jauh.

Penerapan Mekatronika Komputer dalam industri saat ini didasarkan pada akuisisi data waktu nyata untuk diproses atau disimpan. Bergantung pada data yang dikumpulkan, dimungkinkan untuk melakukan pengawasan terhadap proses industri lengkap, menerapkan kontrol sekuensial melalui pengontrol logika yang dapat diprogram (PLC), atau modifikasi parameter operasi mesin. Semua pengumpulan data berkelanjutan ini memungkinkan untuk mengelola produksi melalui analisis data sederhana. Salah satu sistem yang diterapkan dalam industri terkait dengan kontrol komputer adalah sistem SCADA. Sistem SCADA menawarkan kontrol proses otomatis dari layar komputer.

Perbaikan berkelanjutan dari proses industri dan pencarian bentuk organisasi produksi baru meletakkan dasar dari Industri 4.0 atau pabrik pintar. Industri ini mencari digitalisasi dan otomatisasi lengkap, menghasilkan aliran informasi yang teratur dan menghubungkan semua elemen dari suatu proses melalui apa yang disebut IoT (Internet of Things). Kebutuhan akan fleksibilitas proses dan efisiensi produksi melibatkan pengembangan pabrik otonom yang dikendalikan komputer.
