水文学とは、大気や地殻内に存在する水の空間的・時間的な分布や性質(降水、流出、土壌水分、蒸発散など)を研究する学問です。一方、水文地質学は、地下水の研究を専門とする水文学の一分野である。

私たちが慣れ親しんだライフスタイルは、清潔で安価な水が十分に入手できるかどうか、使用後の安全な廃棄ができるかどうかに大きく依存しています。

自然は、私たちが利用できる水の量を制限しています。地球上には十分な量の水がありますが、常に適切なタイミングで適切な場所にあるとは限りません。また、過去に不適切に処分された化学廃棄物が水源に出現している証拠もあります。

私たちは今、非常に高い消費量、不確実な供給に直面しており、洪水や汚染から身を守るための要求が高まっています。きれいな水の希少性による経済や健康への影響が気になります。水文学は、地球の複雑な水システムを理解し、水問題の解決に貢献する必要性に応えて発展してきました。

今日、水文学は水資源の利用計画を立てる上で重要な役割を果たしており、上水道、下水処理、排水、河川保護、レクリエーションなどのエンジニアリングプロジェクトの基本的な部分となっています。
