General Description

The Computer Controlled Focusing Solar Energy Collector, "ECESC", shows the principles of a parabolic trough to collect solar energy.

The unit includes a highly polished stainless steel parabolic reflector on a mobile base. It can be horizontally and vertically adjusted so that solar energy is focused on an energy collector from different positions. The reflector includes a pyranometer to measure the incident solar radiation.

Five interchangeable energy collectors of different sizes are included to study different concentration ratios. One of them has a special black coating to study its effect. Each one has a "J" type temperature sensor to measure the temperature of the collector. Additionally, another insulating glass collector with vacuum coating is included to study the effect of a shielded collector.

This Computer Controlled Unit is supplied with the EDIBON Computer Control System (SCADA), and includes: The unit itself + a Control Interface Box + a Data Acquisition Board + Computer Control, Data Acquisition and Data Management Software Packages, for controlling the process and all parameters involved in the process.

Exercises and guided practices

GUIDED PRACTICAL EXERCISES INCLUDED IN THE MANUAL

  1. Operation of a cylindrical solar collector.
  2. Study of different energy concentration levels depending on the size of the collector.
  3. Comparison of the energy concentration levels of an unshielded cylinder and a shielded cylinder.
  4. Measurement of maximum temperatures reached by the energy collectors.
  5. Optimization and adjustment of a parabolic trough to obtain high concentration levels.
  6. Sensors calibration.

MORE PRACTICAL EXERCISES TO BE DONE WITH THE UNIT

  1. Many students view results simultaneously. To view all results in real time in the classroom by means of a projector or an electronic whiteboard.
  2. Open Control, Multicontrol and Real Time Control. This unit allows intrinsically and/or extrinsically to change the span, gains, proportional, integral, derivative parameters, etc, in real time.
  3. The Computer Control System with SCADA allows a real industrial simulation.
  4. This unit is totally safe as uses mechanical, electrical/electronic, and software safety devices.
  5. This unit can be used for doing applied research.
  6. This unit can be used for giving training courses to Industries even to other Technical Education Institutions.
  7. Control of the ECESC unit process through the control interface box without the computer.
  8. Visualization of all the sensors values used in the ECESC unit process.
  9. Several other exercises can be done and designed by the user.
